A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Port Douglas (Safaris & Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove). Spend the 14th (Thu) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. The adventure continues: stroll through Esplanade Boardwalk, appreciate the history behind Cairns Cenotaph, explore and take pictures at Captain Cook Highway, and view the masterpieces at Bones and Jones.

Named after Lord Byron's grandfather, Byron Bay is not only famous as the easternmost point of Australia, but even more so as one of the liveliest vacation spots in the country.
Venture out of the city with trips to Watersports Guru (in Kingscliff), Yamba (Pippi Beach & Turners Beach) and Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre (in Murwillumbah). On the 26th (Tue), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. And it doesn't end there: enjoy the sea views from Cape Byron Lighthouse, kick back and relax at Broken Head Beach, hike along Cape Byron Walking Track, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Tallow Beach.

The state of Victoria crown jewel, Melbourne boasts shaded streets, leafy residential neighborhoods, vibrant street life, and a picturesque city center.
Step out of Melbourne to go to Torquay and see The Great Ocean Road, which is approximately 1h 40 min away. Dedicate the 11th (Mon) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's lots more to do: admire the natural beauty at Royal Botanic Gardens, take a memorable tour with Tours, tour the water at your own pace with Melbourne Boat Hire, and examine the collection at Melbourne Museum.
